With a unified fundraising effort from friends, family, and San Francisco for Obama volunteers and their East Bay affiliates, the Obamathon has raised more than $15,000 and hundreds of people of all ages are expected to attend the event for Senator Obama’s campaign.
“My personal mantra is best described by James Brown, ‘Any problem can be solved by dancing,’” said Darci Andresen, Obamathon founder. ”So why not put the party back in politics and get funky for things like health care and our future? This event will not only bring the local community together, but will also make a difference in the national election by raising much needed funds from a state that is firmly in Obama’s camp.”
Local talent from DJ collectives Space Cowboys, False Profit, and others will be spinning music of all genres, such as funk, house, hip hop, disco, and world beat.
“The Obamathon is a unique event with a creative energy that really speaks to the ideals of the Obama campaign ⎯ respect, inclusion and empowerment,"
In addition, San Francisco’s Tamale Lady will be dishing out her signature delicacy, Stencil 1 will transform any t-shirt into an Obama keepsake, the creative partnership of Arianna Huffington and Rich Silverstein (founder of local creative agency Goodby, Silverstein & Partners) will donate original poster art for a silent auction, and the San Francisco for Obama office will provide photo opportunities with (a cardboard) Obama, t-shirts and yard signs, as well as information on volunteering.
Participants can ask friends and family to donate for each hour they dance via a personal fundraising page on http://www.mybarackobama.com or donate at the door. Prizes for those who raise the most funds include a personalized chef-prepared dinner for two at the Oakland bistro, À Côté.
