**Did you know that immigrant women face a higher rate of domestic violence than American born women?  And that immigrant women face compounded challenges if they decide to leave due to the culture differences, language barriers, and lack of financial resources?  Did you also know that  “[f]orty-eight percent of Latinas in one study reported that their partner’s violence against them had increased since they immigrated to the United States…and that 51 percent of intimate partner homicide victims were foreign-born, while 45 percent were born in the United States[?]  And Chela is the true story of one such immigrant.

“Chela,” written and performed by her daughter, Dulce Maria Solis, is an intimate biography of one immigrant’s struggle from Mexico to America, from martyrdom to self-worth, and from ignorance to self-discovery. It chronicles the seemingly illogical and unreasonable ways in which Chela reacts and copes with the series of life’s blows and her insurmountable challenge to find love and a life worth living for, in spite of her-self.

This ninety-minute play is performed as vividly and as candidly as mother and daughter remember it.  ***It touches on a variety of topics to include but not limited to: sexual assault, sexual abuse, sexual taboos, domestic violence, and the self versus family, society, and church.

Dulce Maria Solis has performed “Chela” at several venues.  She performed at the Actor’s Alliance of San Diego at the Lyceum Space (San Diego REP) and won Outstanding Female Performance.  She also performed at the Centro Cultural de la Raza and California State University of San Marcos.
Grupo de Teatro SINERGIA’s programming is made possible, in part, by grants from the Department of Cultural Affairs, City Los Angeles, the Los Angeles County Arts Commission, California Arts Council, National Endowment of the Arts. Art Partners.  The William Reagh Los Angeles Photography Center is operated in partnership with the Department of Cultural Affairs, City of Los Angeles.
