The team sponsored by the Raleigh sedation dentist and Raleigh Comprehensive and Cosmetic Dentistry consisted of six members who biked thirty miles during the two days. Two of the Dr. Williamson, DDS team members rode a total of 100 miles the first day and 30 miles the second day. Together, they achieved a grand total of 260 miles despite 98 percent humidity and soaring temperatures.
Though the event had more than 2,000 participants this year, one MS official remarked that they had more riders drop out this year due to the weather than in the previous twenty years in the event's history.
"It was certainly a rough ride, but we thought if MS sufferers could deal with the difficulties and discomfort they need to deal with everyday, it was the least we could do to help out. All of the money raised here, stays here to help those who need it right here in our community, so it was the perfect way to give back every year," stated Chip Harrell, IT Consultant for the Raleigh dentist and Dr. Williamson, DDS team captain. The amount of funds collected by the Raleigh dentist team is currently sitting at $3,500. They will continue to collect donations and pledges until October 6th in an effort to help the National MS Society reach its current goal of $1.6 million.
Last year, the event raised $1 445 546 for MS sufferers. The Bike Ride is the largest source of funding for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society non-profit chapter, who help an estimated 4 300 people deal with this debilitating disease. In addition to sponsoring the MS Bike Ride team each year, the Raleigh cosmetic dentist office also supports the Alice Aycock Poe Center for Health Education, which provides kindergarten to grade two students in Wake County with education on dental care.
