Oct 06, 2008 – The three day north Zone Sports Climbing Competition Was held at Barapathar in Nainital. it was organized by the north Zone Sports Climbing Committee of the Indian mountaineering foundation.
The competition included lead climbing, speed climbing and bouldering. There were participants from Delhi Jammu Kashmir, Haryana, Punjab, Uttarakhand, ITBP, NSG, Airforce and Army. The Secretary S Bhattacharya said that sports events like these are an educational tour for students and should be encouraged and promoted. He pointed out that there is infrastructural problem in the sport climbing is only at Mussouri and Nainital in the north zone. There is no lack of talent but unless the sport is promoted well, the talent will not be able to shine. Harjot kaur, a winner in tow categories said that the event gave her a chance to show her mettle and improve her technique. “It is a rocking sport and people should come forward to try it’’ Sandeep Maiti, another performer said that the sport is though but the climbing condition of Nainital is very suitable.
