Connections Academy Offers Tips to Help Students Combat Spring Fever

Virtual public school keeps students focused until summer

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release)Apr 04, 2008MTS Minnesota Connections Academy, http://www.ConnectionsAcademy.com, a high-quality, highly accountable, virtual public school, is encouraging families to help students combat spring fever and stay focused on school.

Students have returned from spring break—the weather is getting warmer; the snow is beginning to melt and school-age children, from K-12, are showing signs of spring fever. If you are like most parents, you are trying to keep your child motivated while juggling a busy schedule of activities, homework, sports and life in general.

“Fortunately, there are many, easy, ways that parents can stay involved in their child’s education and encourage learning,” said Melissa Nelson, Principal, MTS Minnesota Connections Academy. “Remaining enthusiastic and excited about school, from the first day to the last is key—and a lot of fun when shared by both students and parents.”

Talk to Teachers
Often times, parents are unsure how to get involved, or stay involved, in their child’s education. “A critical component is to communicate with your child’s teachers,
said Nelson. “Teachers can answer important questions about student progress, expectations for the remainder of the school year and your child’s overall behavior in the classroom.” Studies show that greater parental participation can lead to higher student grades and test scores, higher graduation rates, and increased enrollment in post-secondary education.

Volunteer
Many parents can become involved in their child’s education by participating in special projects, chaperoning field trips, or volunteering with your child’s sports team, club or performing arts group. Being involved with your child’s activities will help strengthen your bond and continue to set the stage for greater academic success.

Harness Homework Struggles
Avoiding homework struggles has a lot to do with your family’s attitudes and routines. Does your attitude express excitement and the importance of learning? Do you set aside adequate homework time in your child’s schedule? Can you create a study nook or designated study area in your home? Does homework take precedence over extra-curricular activities, computer time, video games or watching television? Setting and sticking to study expectations is critical. If you haven’t already, discuss a homework routine with your child and together, reach an agreement, including rewards or consequences.

Here are some tips from MTS Minnesota Connections Academy faculty to support your child during homework time:
•   Help review homework that must be completed each day.
•   Encourage your child to finish the tough tasks first.
•   Make sure your child understands the assignment.
•   Ask questions to help your child through problems, and avoid giving away the answer.
•   Encourage your child to take a study break if she seems frustrated. Have a snack, put on some music, or shoot a few hoops. After 15 minutes, try again.
•   Make positive suggestions, but do not criticize. If a child is struggling with writing good sentences, do not pick on his handwriting skills.
•   Praise good work habits such as perseverance, diligence and effort. Comments could include: “You are working so hard” or “I am proud of how you are not giving up.”

Together, you and your child can combat spring fever and finish the school year on a positive note.
