Standby Saturday 24/7 is a campaign, originally started in 2007 in the UK. Australia has joined to take the campaign global. Fundamental to the campaign is the need for all Australians to realize that by cutting standby they will not only cut their CO2 emissions they will save 37 days of electricity every year.
Adrian Bertolini, Programme Director, said
“It’s very easy to get involved in the Standby Saturday 24/7 campaign. Simply by getting into the habit of switching off non-essential electrical appliances properly we can stop wasting significant amounts of energy and reduce our carbon emissions. A very small effort by everyone will make a huge difference to the environment by helping to slow global warming. And of course, saving energy will also save you money!”
Standby Saturday 24/7 will see the first Australian nationwide “All the time – Every time” switch-off of non-essential electrical appliances and equipment, such as TVs, computers, microwaves, stereos, playstations, and mobile phone chargers, with the aim of significantly reducing Australia’s carbon emissions. Many people do not realize flashing red lights, microwave clocks, printers left on are all sending one message “we are wasting your money and warming the planet!
StandbySaturday founder Sally Radford commented “We want to encourage everyone who cares about climate change to start by taking part in the Standby Saturday event. This will be a great chance for individuals and all sorts of groups and communities to feel they are joining together. “
Adrian Bertolini said further:
“This campaign is not just about Saturday. Standby Saturday 24/7 aims to empower people right across Australia to get into the habit of taking simple steps to stop wasting significant amounts of energy. We want to encourage everyone who cares about climate change to start by taking part in the Standby Saturday 24/7 event. This will be a great chance for individuals and all sorts of groups and communities to feel they are joining together in a really worthwhile national initiative.’”
