Minister Killeen Welcomes Additional €39k for Ennis Town Council Sports Capital Programme

Minister of State at the Department of Communications, Energy & Natural Resources Tony Killeen today confirmed that Ennis Town Council is to receive additional funding of EUR39k under the RAPID programme to fund Sports Capital Programs in the town.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release)Jun 29, 2007 – This complements the EUR130k already received by the Council from the Department of Arts, Sport & Tourism.

"I am delighted to see that the efforts of so many clubs in Clare have been rewarded. Sport and recreation is a vital component in a healthy and active lifestyle and this funding is a testament to those volunteers who are the very heart of sporting clubs in Clare and indeed throughout Ireland", commented Minister Killeen.

The sports capital programme, administered by the Department of Arts, Sports and Tourism, provides funding towards the provision of facilities and equipment for sports clubs throughout Ireland with the clubs matching the funds provided under the scheme.

According to Minister Killeen, "It is extremely important that we continue to provide the necessary sports infrastructure and facilities, particularly for our young people, so as to encourage active participation by as many people as possible. The benefits of participation in sport go beyond improvements in people's fitness but contribute to developing a healthy lifestyle."

"This Government will continue to invest in sport in this country and I will continue to work hard to ensure that Clare gets its fair share of this investment in the future", concluded Minister Killeen.

The RAPID (Revitalising Areas by Planning, Investment and Development) Programme is a focused Government initiative to target the 46 most disadvantaged areas in the country. The Programme aims to ensure that priority attention is given to tackling the spatial concentration of poverty and social exclusion within the 46 designated areas through targeting state resources, available under the National Development Plan.
