TERI and ITC Food’s Sunfeast launch a major school campaign in 10 cities

“This event flickers for us a hope in a world that has forgotten to respect its environment, and encourages children, teachers, schools and parents to join hands for a cleaner, greener future.” Dr. RK Pachauri, Director General TERI.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release)Jun 25, 2007 – ITC Foods’ Sunfeast in consonance with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) has launched their Sunfeast Hara Banao Campaign and are planning to reach out to 550 schools across the country on the hot topic of the day – ‘Climate Change’. The programme will be implemented in ten cities, namely Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Cochin, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Mumbai, Delhi and NCR, and Pune.  Sunfeast Hara Banao will be using the expertise of TERI for educating children and teachers on this subject.

TERI, as a part of its programme activities will be conducting a teacher training workshop for two teachers from each school, so that teachers are equipped with the most current and updated knowledge regarding Climate Change. They will be given teachers fact sheets that give them more info on each of the posters; project ideas and practical exercises that they can conduct in schools; games that they can play with the kids; stories, songs, one-act plays etc.

Subject experts from TERI will also have separate interactions with students as TERI believes that children are the best ambassadors of the message and has, consequently, over the years, involved them in various environment related programs. Inter-school competitions will also be held.

The TERI-Sunfeast Hara Banao Campaign will also give all participating schools a set of excellent teaching aids, comprising of ‘Global Warning’ - a TERI film on climate change, a series of six informative posters for the classrooms, fact sheets with interesting information for the teachers and a comprehensive list of projects, practical exercises and activities that can be taken up by the school. There is no registration fee and all teaching materials are provided free of cost.

The programme also enables schools to participate in ‘Sow a Seed Today’, a campaign through which over 1 crore seeds will be distributed to children and the schools.

Sunfeast Hara Banao Fests will be organized at the end of the year where students can showcase their projects, participate in panel discussions and fun environment based competitions. Students who do ‘Cool’ work will participate in a radio/TV talk show.

Environmental education is now a subject in the syllabus and with such an effort teachers will get a range of aids that will help make this subject more 'fun' and 'experiential' instead of text-bookish.

The registration for the campaign is open. Schools can directly contact TERI offices in Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai for more information. Last date for registration in Chennai, Cochin, Coimbatore, Hydrabad, Mumbai, Pune and Ahmedabad is June 30th and July 15th for Delhi/NCR and Lucknow.
