However it has only really been in the last twenty years since China's reform and opening policy that China's industrial sewing machine industry has grown from a zero start to cater for ever increasing domestic demands, and now competes within the world's markets.

It was in 1984 when the industry began to address the overproduction of Chinese household machines to cater for the shortage in industrial machines. Nowadays, according to China's Sewing Machinery Association (CSMA): '[The industry] occupies an irreplaceable place in developing the national economy, expanding exportation and foreign exchange earnings, and improving the life of the people.
